Funny wedding vows are a great way of letting your personalities shine through on your wedding day. If you and your partner don't really consider yourselves to be traditional, or great romantics, then your wedding vows shouldn't be either.
If you're both fun and carefree, then why not have your vows reflect this?
If you are considering including some funny wedding vows in your ceremony, there are a few things to keep in mind. Some religions will not allow you to stray form traditional wordings. Stay away from jokes at each other's expense, as well as references that others may not understand.
I knew when I first started planning my ceremony that I would want to include some funny wedding vows. I had no idea where to start. I wanted to say something that was meaningful, personal, but not too serious. Neither of us are particularly romantic, or traditional, so ordinary vows seemed a little hollow to me.
I also didn't like the word 'obey'.
In an effort to come up with something a little truer to our relationship and personalities, I spent days pouring over Internet forums, poetry books and vow collections. Here was what my vows ended up looking like:
They were personal, and a little bit funny too. However, rather than make all of our vows a joke, we just included a couple of things to give people a chuckle.
At many weddings I've been to I've noticed brides and grooms spicing up traditional vows with their own creative wording. Here is one example that I really liked.
While they were mostly traditional vows, I loved the 'Toy Story' reference at the end. Often I hear brides and grooms referencing their hobbies and activities in their vows, especially if they take part in them together.
Here are some funny vows I heard between a couple who enjoyed swing dancing:
If you and your partner have a hobby you share, you could include it as a part of your funny wedding vows in the same way, be it tennis, golf, or rock collecting. Some couples like to make references to the others habits.
Here are some funny vows I've heard slight variations of a few times:
While you might get a couple of laughs from your audience, I personally don't like vows like this. While it's nice to have funny vows that are personal, it's not really nice to begrudge your partner their bad habits, like shopping too much or not doing the dishes, especially on your special day. Sometimes it's best to keep your jokes to the speeches!
There is certainly a place for funny wedding vows at your ceremony. They can lighten the mood, and also help to make your day a little more personal and less cookie cutter.
