Anna & John's
Wedding Reception At Home

Anna and John spoke to me a while back about their wedding reception at home. They're close friends and so they let me share their wedding with you. They're both fun loving, and love the great outdoors and they wanted nothing more than a relaxed feel to their wedding. For them, it was all about the reception venue.

They wanted to do something different, but more importantly they wanted to have their reception at home. With John's leftfield tendencies, he investigated how they could really stand out from the crowd and they settled on a yurt, a beautiful, handmade Mongolian tent by Toby Fairlove Yurts.

The inside was decorated with pink and blue fairy lights giving off a stunning light in the late evening, whilst everyone danced the night away to the ceilidh band.

Their ceremony was held at Wilton Castle, a ruined castle near Ross-on-Wye. With incredible views over the River Wye, the location was to die-for. There was the ruined castle where they had the ceremony and a champagne reception on one side and the stunning views of the Wye Valley on the other.

A local string quartet played the bride in and after the ceremony a couple of friends sang a few of the couple's favourite songs, including 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow' and 'Sunrise, Sunset' from Fiddler on the Roof.

Once everyone had had a few glasses of champagne, they headed back to Anna's house for their wedding reception at home. They decorated the yurt with plenty of sweetpeas, lilies, peonies and pink roses, all carefully arranged by Anna's mum.

Her cousins did all the signage, including directions, table plan, video diary tent sign and table numbers. They little ones also decorated the jam jars for the table flowers using decoupage sheets. The slightly older boys helped to make tin can lanterns stamped with hearts and hung from trees around the garden.

Anna & John's wedding reception at home

Instead of a guest book, Anna and John asked for two things. The first was a favourite family recipe so they could collate all the recipes into a compendium of their friends and families best recipes – what a treasure! The second was a short video of their love and wishes which could be made in the video diary room.

For her dress, Anna took inspiration from Candy Anthony's 1950s wedding dress designs, but got a seamstress from nikkij.co.uk to work her magic by recreating the dress. Anna choose this cute non-traditional style as it was a fairly relaxed day and didn't warrant a 'big' traditional dress. I must say, she looks pretty damn cute.

John wore a grey three piece suit and stripy tie. His groomsmen all wore their ownsuits, including a random selection of waistcoats.

The thing I really liked about Anna and John's big day was how relaxed it was. Having a wedding reception at home really ensures that everything is kept calm and chilled out as you familiar people and surroundings.

It's clear from what Anna said that this was important to her: "What's really great about a wedding reception at home, is that every time I go to my family home, I remember our special day. We'll always have fantastic memories of our wedding day, but we'll be reminded every time we visit our family home."
