Rachel and Dan's
Urban Winter Wedding

I particularly like Rachel and Dan's winter wedding because they use the city setting to the utmost charm. The Millennium Galleries in Sheffield is urban, stark in the right measurement and filled with light from the glass frontage. It's modern, chic and a completely different kind of wedding venue which has been captured beautifully by S6 Photography.

The wedding was in the middle of December so the couple took complete advantage of the Christmas lights to add warmth and a hazy glow to the venue. They also hired the Winter Gardens next door for their drinks reception, which provided a beautiful leafy scene and stunning contrast the high ceilings, metal and glass of the Millennium Galleries.

Originally the venue was a bit of wild card for them, but having eliminated country houses due to restrictions on photography or the size of ladies heels, they decided something more modern and cool would suit their loose 1920s theme.

Rachel wore a custom made wedding dress, fashioned from elements from several designs that she'd seen. It was carefully considered and created by the Bridal Studio wedding dress makers in Matlock. The dress was a beautiful silver silk and Rachel kept warm with a little bolero. Rachel said:

"I knew I didn't want a traditional white, cream or ivory dress which really limits what is available in the bridal shops. I tried some on but none really felt like 'the one'. I'd also seen an evening dress in John Lewis that I liked the neck-line of and the deco shoulder detailing (which is where the theme came from. I approached the manufacturers of the John Lewis dress and they allowed me to buy the shoulder detailing from them".

For the details, Rachel pulled in elements from the 1920s with her invitations, table seating plan and table centrepieces. Monochrome, silver and navy were their chosen colours for a subtle, but urban feel.

For Rachel and Dan, the day was all about being a little bit different and not tied to formality. Rachel said:

"We didn't want to be restricted by traditions and only included those that fitted with what we wanted. We didn't have the ceremony until 5pm so that guests wouldn't be waiting around between the ceremony and wedding breakfast, we had the speeches before the meal and had no separate evening reception. I think that each wedding is different because it reflects the couple's personality, but that some couples feel restricted by what they 'should' have rather than what they might 'want'."

Rachel and Dan's winter wedding was shot by the lovely Jon from S6 Photography who are based in Sheffield, S6 to be precise. We've featured some other work of S6 Photography here.
